The U.S. Southern Command announced it has completed its rescue mission in Venezuela, which began after two major earthquakes on June 24 with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, killing more than 5,500 people. General Donovan confirmed that the last U.S. service members have left the country, but assured that the American people will continue to support Venezuelans. At the height of the operation, 2,000 rescuers were working in the region, as well as naval vessels and aircraft delivering humanitarian aid. Now, Venezuela will coordinate the long-term recovery directly with the U.S. State Department, which, according to the U.S. side, has already provided the country with the largest volume of international assistance amid this tragedy.
