A nine-year-old girl suffered a serious injury during a family hike on the trail to Red Top Lookout in Kittitas County, Washington. After falling in an area known as the agate beds, she sustained a deep wound to her right leg. In response to a call from her parents at 1:24 p.m., about 30 rescuers were dispatched. Firefighters and other emergency personnel had to travel approximately 2 miles along the remote trail to reach her. The girl was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The agate beds are popular with rock enthusiasts searching for “thunder eggs” and other glittering minerals, but rescuers urged visitors to exercise caution and prepare for emergencies in advance: help may take time to arrive in remote areas.
