Ghost City Beneath Your Feet: The Mystery of Underground Seattle

Imagine walking down a street in your city while, just a few yards below your feet, entire blocks, shops, and sidewalks lie hidden from view. Sounds like a fairy tale about an underground kingdom? But it is completely real—and this magical place is located in the American city of Seattle. More than a century ago, engineers and residents did something so unusual that tourists from around the world now descend underground to see a real “ghost city” hidden beneath the familiar streets.

The Fire That Changed Everything

The story begins in the summer of 1889. That was when Seattle experienced a true nightmare: the Great Fire. It started by accident when a worker in a small workshop accidentally spilled wood glue onto a hot stove. The glue caught fire, and the flames quickly spread to nearby wooden buildings. At the time, almost every building in the city center was made of wood, so the fire raced through the streets like a hungry dragon, destroying practically the entire business district within a few hours.

It seemed like a tragedy. But Seattle’s residents were determined. They decided not merely to rebuild the city, but to make it better and safer. And that is where the most interesting part begins.

A Problem with Toilets and the City’s Clever Plan

Seattle had another problem—one that is hard to describe without a smile: the city had been built too close to sea level. Because of the tides, the water sometimes rose so high that it flooded the sewer system. Imagine this: during high tide, water from the pipes could surge back into homes through the toilets! Not the most pleasant way to live beside the ocean, right?

The city’s engineers came up with a bold solution: raise the streets by as much as 10–33 feet in different areas so that the sewer system would work properly even during high tide. But there was one catch: while the streets were being raised, buildings had already begun to be rebuilt at the old, lower level. As a result, something extraordinary emerged—between the new elevated streets and the old buildings, real stone “canyons” formed, one or two stories deep.

People adapted and continued using the ground floors of their buildings—but now they had to reach them by going down staircases, as if entering a basement. The old sidewalks, which had once been at ground level, ended up beneath the new, raised streets.

Purple Glass and Forgotten Staircases

The most magical part was the way daylight reached underground. Builders inserted square glass tiles into the new sidewalks so sunlight could shine down into the underground corridors. Interestingly, over time, the glass changed color in the sunlight, turning a delicate purple. This effect is known as “Seattle purple glass,” and surviving pieces can still be seen in the city’s sidewalks.

The underground sidewalks remained in use for many years. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, city officials sounded the alarm: the dark, damp tunnels had become a favorite home for rats, bringing with them the risk of diseases such as the plague. The authorities closed the underground passageways to the general public, and people gradually began to forget about this remarkable place.

Fortunately, it was not completely destroyed. Decades later, a historian and enthusiast named Bill Speidel rediscovered the tunnels and opened them to the public in the 1960s, leading the first tours there. Today, the Seattle Underground Tour is one of the city’s most popular attractions, and even schoolchildren enjoy visiting it.

Why It Matters Today

It may seem that underground Seattle is merely a quirky detail of history. But in fact, it offers a valuable lesson: what appears to be a problem today—tides, fires, inconvenient sidewalks—can become a remarkable legacy tomorrow. Modern engineers must take the old tunnels into account, reinforce foundations, and ensure that the underground corridors do not interfere with new infrastructure such as pipes, cables, and the subway.

So, without realizing it, Seattle’s residents created a real open-air museum more than a century ago. Now, when walking along the city’s sunny streets, it is worth remembering that an entire world lies hidden beneath your feet—a world that preserves the story of a devastating fire, a clever engineering solution, and extraordinary human determination.
